Our Journey

A look back at 1996 would find two young family men swinging hammers together building small emergency homes in the West of Auckland. From this humble start, 2 men and a dog, a company was formed and has since flourished. Today, Ryan & Murray Ltd offers commercial and residential construction solutions throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific, employing a staff of 90 tradesmen and foremen. Recent years have seen the company expand its labour-only service to high volume residential developments and to carpentry projects of major scale. In the 2023 calendar year the company built over 240 new residential developments and a new south Auckland school development. Ryan & Murray Ltd brings old-school construction values and skills at scale.

Our clients are cherished and we have been honoured to work with them all, shaping and bringing their ideas into reality. We invite you to be part of our continuing journey.

Our RML Family

Having the right team behind us from the beginning and a leadership with a clear focus of unity, values and vision are the keys to the success of RML today and will be into our future.
RML operates a tight team of professional builders, many of whom have been with the company from its early days. The team is still led by Bill and Colin who remain actively involved in the day to day operations of the company. While they may be the apparent leaders it is Shiley Ryan and Dominique Murray who provide the glue in the operation, overseeing office admin, HR and H&S functions. RML is essentially a company of families with a second generation of sons now managing operations on site.

Bill Ryan, Relationship Manager, CEO

Recognising the importance of relationships with our customers, company founder Bill Ryan has primary responsibility for relationship management guiding our customers from first enquiry to handover and beyond.

"We know that offering excellence in craftsmanship at a compelling price is insufficient for success. Rather, we strive to build enduring relationships with our customers, clients and suppliers predicated on excellence at every stage of the build process, be it at prebuild planning, design and consent, or build execution and maintenance programming. We want to be their ‘top of mind’ choice for the next or future projects."

In his spare time Bill likes to fish and consequently can relate many stories of dubious authenticity.

Colin Murray, QS and Project Delivery Manager

Colin takes the reigns for project delivery. He brings an old school, no-nonsense approach to construction, setting a pace and a methodology that navigates a project away from risk and maximises efficiency and quality. Colin is living proof that good planning and a steady tempo best drives a project to a successful completion and that shortcuts, inevitably, are not. Colin, like the project tempos he sets is also in constant motion, walking everywhere as fast as he can while checking and reviewing works or issuing instructions. This brings a respectful yet cheeky smile to the guys on site. "Do it once and do it right".

Shirley Ryan - Administration and Payroll Manger

Shirley Ryan keeps a careful eye and steady hand our office administration functions and maintains a close relationship with the staff and their families. Our staff, suppliers and customers are assured by and benefit from the constancy and dependability she brings to her role. Shirley's cool unruffled manner keeps the wheels turning behind the scene. Our staff know they can rely on her wisdom and discretion.

Dominique Murray, H&S Manager

Dominique has the unenviable role of managing the company’s health and safety compliance on site and fulfilling the companies contractual obligations around H&S. Keeping our staff and the public safe on our sites is a never-ending process. With a staff of over 90 men Dominique’s vigilance and relentless pursuit of safety has without help us avoid serious incidents. She is fiercely protective of the people under her care and does not hesitate for an instant in laying down the law, with a "My way or the highway" approach to H&S compliance.

Senior Site Managers

Grant Wyatt, LBP Project and Site Management

Grant brings superb man management skills and construction knowledge to the company and is our most senior employee and will typically run our largest projects on site.

Xiaofeng Lu (Eagle) LBP, Project Mananger

Eagle provides the back up for Colin and Grant, covering multiple projects at any one time, filling in for any site management gaps that inevitably occur with subcontractors and providing site management continuity for our staff and customers. Xiaojeng’s wealth of technical knowledge, international experience with new ideas and modern innovations is particularly beneficial in the early planning stages of a project and help invigorate the company.

Alan Hewlett, LBP, Senior Site Manager

Alan remains perhaps the fittest man in the company despite not being able to remember his birthday. Alan is one of our longest serving staff members having joined when you could count our numbers on one hand (and one was a dog), but Alan can keep up with even the youngest members in his charge. Like Colin his values of personal discipline, pace and quality find their way into the men and women around him inspiring in them performance and self respect. Once we have that in a young person we can make great builders out of them.
